Makgatho Primary School The Flight

Last weekend we (Jane and Bob, Principal and Business Partner) did the flights for the parents and families that won the raffle at school. We had the raffle to get them to attend a session on how to help the school with their child’s education. The incentive got 70% of the parents to attend which is about twice what we would normally expect. They all signed declarations about what they would do and then we did the draw and three families were to go up in the air for the first time.

Thembani Primary School Increase in Parental Involvement at Thembani Primary School

Parental involvement at Thembani Primary School situated in Langa, which is in Cape Town, has started increasing. Below, the Principal, Thobela Guzana, shares how the school went about achieving this:

Thembani Public Primary School has three key partners in improving our school – the children, the parents and the educators. The School Governing Body (SGB) also plays an important role. Increasing the involvement of our parents in their children’s education is a key objective in our 2014 strategic plan.

Up until 2013, parent meetings were held on Sunday mornings and attendance was very low.  In mid-2013, we invited parents to meetings midweek after 17h30, and provided tea and biscuits for the first time.  We noticed an immediate increase in attendance and this increased each term.  At the end of 2013, we sent out our first 4-page Xhosa newsletter, giving parents an overview of the successes of the year. This was part of our attempt to improve communication between parents and the school.  We also adopted the bulk SMS service, which was offered through Partners for Possibility (PfP) as a means of sending invitations to parents, and we started to update our parent contact records through the parents register at parents meetings.

Sophakama Primary School Sophakama Strategising for Success

Following the success of the Teambuilding workshop that the teachers of Sophakama Primary School attended, they recently had two Strategic Planning Sessions. The sessions were again facilitated by Louise Hendey and the attendees were very enthusiastic!

One of the Rogz team members wrote the following report:

“Following our recent Teambuilding event with the Sophakama staff on 22 Feb, we were very pleased to be able to dedicate two afternoons to get together again as an entire team and continue to build on this positive momentum.
The objective of these two sessions were to identify and prioritize all issues needing attention and then to select the key projects that we are able to tackle at this point in time.
We were fortunate to have Louise Hendey join us again to facilitate the two sessions – aiding the team both with out of the box thinking as well as keeping on track towards an ultimate plan.

Bovet Primary School Mobile iPad Lab for Bovet Primary School

Bovet Primary School situated in the Alexandra Township, Gauteng, was the recipient of a mobile iPad lab sponsorship from iSchool Africa.

iSchool Africa is an education initiative that was developed by Core Group. The initiative reaches schools across South Africa in rural and urban settings. The iPad learning programme is one of three programmes that they currently run. The programme has already reached approximately 32 000 learners and 750 teachers.

The iPad learning programme includes a 20 iPad mini, Macbook Air and Projector sponsorship. The iPad minis are pre-loaded with apps that are compliant with the national school curriculum and will support school work schedules. A trainer will be working with the teachers at the school, with the idea being that the school will be able to run the programme on their own after six months.
