Rembrandt Primary Rembrandt Primary Career Day at Multotec

Rembrandt Park Primary held a Career Day on 15 October 2012 at Multotec in Johannesburg, as a run-up to the schools official Career Day. The Multotec Group was established more than thirty years ago and its core business is the supply of products and services to the mining, mineral beneficiation and power generation industries.  110 learners, 4 teachers and Principal Elizabeth Seema attended the Career Day. Everyone was given visitor tags, stationery and mineral water on arrival which made the learners feel very important and welcomed by the friendly staff of Multotec.

 
The session began with a welcome and then presentations by individuals within the company who were involved in various careers such as finance, human resource management, engineers, fitters and turners and many more. The emphasis was that not all of us will end up with a degree, but practical work is vital and is very much in demand in many industries. 
 
The learners were allowed to ask questions after each presentation. The questions were very thought provoking, intelligent and clarified many details of the various careers on display.  The learners and teaching staff then boarded the bus to view other areas of the company to see aspects of the production capacities that it has. After a lovely lunch they returned to school in time for the final bell of the day and to prepare for the official Career Day to be hosted the next day.
 
“The children certainly learned a lot and it was good to take them to a company environment, rather than to just tell them about it.” Principal Elizabeth Seema said.
 
The Principal, staff and learners of Rembrandt Primary School would like to thank everyone at Multotec involved with facilitating this event, especially Bernadette and Thomas and they look forward to a continued relationship with Multotec.

Mabeoana Intermediate School Mabeoana Intermediate School

Principal Thami Mngoma and Business Leader Ansa Lange worked diligently on their Partnership Plan, and were able to formulate a framework of most urgent needs at the school and possible action plans. By finding the right resources and people, outsourcing some initiatives and collaborating on all the projects, the partners are positive that they will get more done than expected.

Mabeoana Intermediate is situated in the area of Phahameng, Bloemfontein, and serves just over 800 learners. Its facilities are limited and generally in state of disrepair. Like many of the lower quintile schools in South Africa, Mabeoana does not have a school hall. It does however, have a state-of-the-art, interactive smartboard classroom equipped with i-Pads. Sadly, it is not operational as the staff do not feel competent using it.

Due to the poor backgrounds of the learners, the school has implemented a feeding scheme. Currently, a meal is given to each learner during the morning class hours. Ideally, Thami would like to provide a meal for the children after school as they find it difficult to do homework on an empty stomach. This is, unfortunately, not feasible at the moment. However, when there is extra food, it is donated to the families that need it most.

Hayes Primary School Hayes Primary School Annual Report

PfP partners are usually advised against tackling issues in their schools during the initial stages of their partnership. Rather, focusing first on developing a relationship of trust and ensuring that there is a comprehensive understanding of the schools’ context is encouraged. However, when Business Leader Marius Pienaar partnered with Principal Yolandé de Klerk, he soon became aware of the dire situation Hayes Primary finds itself in. He felt compelled to support the school in every way possible right off the bat.

Located 60km from De Aar in the Northern Cape, Hayes Primary is one of the most under-resourced and isolated schools in its district, and has operated with very little support from the government for many years.

It is the only farm school located in the poverty-stricken rural community of Houtkraal Plaas, where the parents work on local sheep farms or as domestic workers elsewhere. While the learners benefit from a government feeding scheme, the school only has two classrooms and the Principal’s office doubles as the kitchen where the learners’ meals are prepared. The teaching staff consists of two dedicated educators who each provide tuition to 57 learners from three different grades in one classroom simultaneously.

Cloetesville High School Cloetesville High School Annual Report

Deon Myburgh, the manager for ICT Operations at Mediclinic Southern Africa and Principal Dorian Meyer of Cloetesville High School believe their PfP partnership has been a ‘real match made in heaven’ - not only for them, but for the learners and the community.

This gang-infested, drug-ridden quintile 4 school in Cloetesville, Stellenbosch caters for children from under-privileged backgrounds. High unemployment rates among the parents of the learners means only a few percentage of the parents can afford to pay school fees. Currently, the school serves 1,152 students and has 39 teachers.

To compound an already formidable schooling environment, less than 5% of the students pursue their studies after matric even though most Grade 12 learners achieve matric results which make them eligible to further their studies. In 2017, 63,5% of learners obtained a matric pass, with 27% obtaining a Bachelors pass and 34% a Diploma pass.

Mmamarama Secondary School Seshego school creates food security through ‘sowing’ skills project

The establishment of a sustainable vegetable garden at Mmamarama Secondary School in Seshego, Polokwane has provided an opportunity for parents and community members to raise funds for the school, while improving the health of learners through access to nutritious food.

Prudens Secondary School ‘’Prudens now on a growth trajectory,’’ say PfP partners

Arthur Molokele joined Partners for Possibility (PfP) with the expectation that he would benefit from leadership and personal development – all with the aim of taking the school to a new level educationally, socially and economically.

Kirsten Henderson, who is passionate about education, remarked that the PfP programme resonated with her from the very first time she heard about it.

Together, the partners tackled the pertinent issues of the Soweto school, while demonstrating that collaborative thinking, respectful reciprocity and dogged determination do yield positive results

Ebuhleni Primary School Blog Ebuhleni abound with possibility

Two leaders in their own right – School Principal, Nelisiwe Khoza, and Sales Manager, Collin Mkhize - have successfully improved aspects of school life at Soweto’s Ebuhleni Primary by participating in the Partners for Possibility (PfP) leadership development process

 

Over the 12-month period, the partners made notable headway in tackling the various issues at the school, which range from below par academic performance and a lack of extra mural activities to team cohesiveness and inadequate school infrastructure.                                                      

While the PfP Time to think, Flawless Consulting and Community Building workshops helped Nelisiwe and Collin gain awareness in terms of their own leadership, a perhaps more significant outcome of this experience was the formulation of a comprehensive school improvement plan which presented the duo with an opportunity to implement their newly acquired leadership skills.

PfP Blog PfP represented at WISE@NY Forum

In July, the ground-breaking PfP programme was named as one of six winners of the coveted global World Innovation Summit for Education (WISE) Awards. On 22 September, the WISE@NY forum, which took place at the Altman Building in New York, saw the presentation of the 2018 WISE Awards, recognising all six winning projects from five different countries.

Receiving the award on behalf of PfP, Dr Louise Van Rhyn made the compelling ‘case’ for PfP in a rousing seven-minute talk.
