Dr Mathole Motshekga Primary Christmas Surprise for Dr Mathole Motshekga Primary School

On November 27th 2012, the 1563 learners at Dr Mathole Motshekga Primary School in Rabie Ridge in Johannesburg, received a “Christmas Surprise” via the NPO Children@Play.
S@CC was contacted by Lion du Plessis of Children@play , a NPO acting as a conduit between Corporate CSI spending and sourcing appropriate beneficiaries. One of their corporate clients, BAE Systems, expressed a desire to make a significant contribution to different schools on the Johannesburg East Rand.
Dr Mathole Motshekga Primary School was fortunate to be one of lucky schools chosen to receive the Christmas Surprise.
Principal Tabitha Kulima was unfortunately called away by the GDE district office to a meeting and missed the excitement, but her PfP Mpuseng Moloi was on hand to join in the festivities, fun and games with the learners and their teachers.
Thanks to BAE Systems each child received a compendium of board games, a bean bag, a skipping rope and a lunch box filled a scrumptious meal.
“The vibe in the school was electric!” said Stephanie Dawson-Cosser, Learning Process Facilitator to Principal Tabitha Kulima and her PfP Mpuseng Moloi.

The re-vamped reading room which boasts a variety of literature for all age groups is complete with six reading tables, new shelving and large projector screen display, was officially opened on 8th November 2012.  The colourful walls and hand painted murals transformed the once dreary, under-resourced room into a creative space that’s calm and focused for learning.  “It’s a momentous day in the history of Kannemeyer. Reading is food to the brain and the key to learning. At Kannemeyer, reading is at the top of our priority list. We are grateful that our learners will now have an access to a space where they are able to enjoy the delight of reading and learning” said school Principal, Ridwan Samodien.

Oceans View School for LSEN Ocean View one step closer to new school building

Most of South Africa’s children with disabilities live in poverty. Not only are they faced with the daily challenges of their impairment, but also the neglect and suffering associated with need.
Ivanna Granelli, who has been partnered with Farida Williams, principal of Ocean View School for Learners with Special Educational Needs (LSEN), has come to realise just how difficult daily life is for children with disabilities.
Ivanna experienced feelings of guilt at living a life of privilege close to a community plagued by deprivation, and saw the Partner for Possibility Programme as a way of giving back.
Little did she know that the insight she gained from working with Farida and the community of Ocean View would prove to be more meaningful than she could have imagined.

Thomas Wildschutt Primary School Sandra and David establish a lasting relationship

When David Sineke, researcher and analyst at Engen, first visited Thomas Wildschutt Junior Primary School a year ago, he was struck by the huge discrepancies that still exist between the historically ‘black’ and historically ‘white’ schools. Now looking back, David says working in the Retreat community was a sheer privilege.

“I remember driving back from our first Community of Practice meeting and thinking how privileged I was to have such comfortable working environment compared to working as an educator in a typical ‘township’ environment. To be present amongst the parents of the school was most humbling,” David said.

Kleinberg Primary School Partnerships challenge perceptions

Creating opportunities for business, government and civil society to deal collaboratively with South Africa’s educational challenges is at the heart of the S@CC programme. And it’s exactly this that drew Nishendra Moodley to be a part of this groundbreaking initiative.

Nishendra works as management consultant for one of South Africa’s leading consulting firms and believed he had valuable knowledge and management skills that would be useful to a school principal.
“Being a management consultant,” Nishendra says, “I am very interested in improving systems in the public sector and wanted to make an impact on a national level.”
Nishendra was partnered with Yaghya Chotia, principal of Kleinberg Primary School, and soon realised his assumptions were wrong.
