Partners for Possibility

PfP Blog Cape Town Community Building Workshop

Partners for Possibility recently hosted a Community Building Workshop at the Bellville Civic Theatre. The participants were mostly from the Cape Town Leadership Circle 10. For two days, the participants where led through a journey of introspection by facilitator Stephanie Dawson-Cosser that would help them realise the contribution that they can be to their communities. This journey was comprised of a number of activities that helped to bring out the lessons outlined in the Six Conversations of Community Building.

PfP Blog PfP at Fairmont High School

Partners for Possibility (PfP) was invited to speak at a Parent Meeting at Fairmont High School by the Fairmont Parent Forum. The high school is situated in Durbanville. It is their vision to place their school at the centre of their community and to mobilise parents and learners to take responsibility for their school and this was shared with the broader parent body at a meeting in February.

This vision speaks to the heart of the PfP mission and one of our Principals, Andre Pretorious, addressed the parent body. Andre is the Principal of Heathfield Primary School and has been a proud PfP since February 2011.

PfP Blog Chess Creates a Stir at Surrey Primary

Towards the end of 2012, the Principal of Surrey Primary School, Imtiaz Adams, decided to set time aside in the school week for every learner in the school to watch the movie “Knights of the South Bronx”.  This was done to help ignite an interest in chess amongst the learners.

The movie is based on the real life story of a teacher who taught learners from troubled backgrounds to play chess, using it as a metaphor to teach them to rise above their difficult circumstances.According to Imtiaz, many of the learners at the school could relate to the movie as they come from areas such as Manenberg, Heideveld and Gugulethu.

The movie was successful in promoting an interest in chess amongst the learners and many of them were eager to learn to play the sport. The school was able to secure enough chess sets for the initial demand. The popularity of the sport at the school has, however, increased substantially and the limited number of chess sets is no longer enough to meet the demand.  The focus of the intiative is on developing the talent of the younger learners at the school, to ensure the sustainability of it.
