Grant Kelly

Grant’s career at Nedbank started in 2005. Since joining Nedbank some 14 years ago, Grant has been in a number of roles across the Group, both in the front line businesses and in group functions. In addition to Grant’s formal roles in the bank, he has always actively sought involvement in the social transformation activities within the bank, initially by chairing the Corporate Banking Employment Equity Forum and then the Nedbank Corporate Transformation Forum. Grant is also a trustee on the Nedbank Foundation, having joined the Foundation’s board in 2014. Before joining Nedbank, Grant was the Managing Director of Global Ratings (previously Duff & Phelps Africa), a pan-African ratings company which was at the forefront of establishing the credit ratings industry across Africa’s emerging frontier markets.

A University of Cape Town graduate, Grant got his Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Philosophy (focussing on South African political philosophy) and English. This is where his passion for education was ignited and it was the writings of Steve Biko that inspired him to begin his life-long journey of self-awareness and social consciousness. More recently, Grant completed the PfP programme, which was a profoundly moving experience and the fulfilment of a long standing aspiration.

Grant is a passionate African and is energised by the incredible latent potential across the continent. Noting that one of Africa’s biggest challenges is that the “distribution curve of opportunity” is not mirrored by the “distribution curve of talent”, the region offers the biggest transformation opportunity on the planet. Grant’s goal is to play his part in unlocking that potential through leveraging modern technology to “leapfrog” traditional developmental phases, most notably in financial inclusion, healthcare and education.

Grant is married to Celia and their proudest achievement is their two boys, who are in their words “the greatest gift in life”!
